Aggressiveman I vs Aggressiveman II

Written by alejo on September 3rd, 2007

I guess the title is quite self-explanatory. This was the first game in the 5th Rioplatense Tournament, between me (8k) and Ecchi (7k?) and took place on KGS last Friday.

As I’ve already told you and you’ve seen, my style has become more and more aggressive lately. From my point of view, I think it’s due to two things:
1. My intuition has increased a lot lately and I’m able to find some good moves (or, at least, they seem so to me) which I couldn’t spot some weeks ago. Personally I think this might be the result from viewing pro games with the “guess next move” enabled.
2. My openning sucks. Sincerely, I think this is the next weak part of my game which I’ll try to improve.

I just took a quick look through the game, but some things I saw:

Upper Left – The move B9 (D16) is black saying that he really wants to settle quickly (essentially it makes C17 and and C15 miai.), so B usually will play B11 at C17. This way gives w a free forcing move with D17. After black gets c17, w needs to defend with B16 or the like, otherwise B’s c15 cut works (in game it sat for a while, even up until B189 c15 still works)

B41 – It’s a contact move against a weak group, and there’s no cut to defend. Instead B can try to attack with a move anywhere in the H5- M6 area, there’s also a second weak group white has on the right, so splitting and leaning attacks are always an option.

B45 – P6 is a better shape point to take, after that white’s shape is flat

B63 – Just capture, it’s more simple and black has no worries locally.

B93 – m4 protects without letting L3 be sente

B99 – J5 connects, white’s only real cut is with the awkward move k4 and black connects to n8 pretty easily.

B159 – Black can get a little bit more with G17, since the four center stones are already captured.

Cheers

Doesn’t B119 at T6 instead of T5 kill white’s group ?
Great web site ! It’s nice to read it and see your progress Alejo…

Upper Left: I hadnn’t platyed any joseki for the pincer white made, so I tried to remember “something” which seemed like a joseki in this corner and that’s what I got… Next time I’ll do better. Thanks.

B41. I hadn’t realised it. Good point. Playing at H6-M5 is much better… I need to start ignoring my opponent’s moves.

B45. Yes, totally a mess..

B63: But if black captures then white can make the atari from the upper side and gain some strenght, no? That’s why I didn’t kill the stone.

B93: Um… interesting move… I wouldn’t have lost sente there…

B159: I was so afraid trying to rescue this stones that I went for the most obvious ones… and lost that weakness.

Thank you for your comments!!! They’re very helpful!!!

Ouch… that’s true. During the game I thought of it, but decided that wouldn’t work. Now, I’ve been reading it more calmly and it seems to work…

Guess I should calm myself a little bit more during the games.

I’m glad you like the site ;)
What would you think about adding background music? (oriental peaceful one, obviously)

Thanks for the comment!!
