Though I’m still downloading them, a couple of friends have already told me about them. Though they may not be the best games ever published, they grant you a nice amount of fun on your spare time.

Collected money will be divided up into the rates you want among: developers, Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Child’s Play Charity. You can also give a tip to the Humble Bundle to support this kind of project.

The games are multiplatform and released as open-souce whenever they reach the million dollars (they’ve collected around 940.000$ by now). Here you can see their numbers by now:
Number of purchases:124,824
Average purchase: $7.56
Average Windows: $6.37 (about 55% of users)
Average Mac: $8.49 (23% aprox)
Average Linux: $13.69 (23% aprox)

Funnily enough, Linux users pay twice than Windows’

The last time I took part into a project like this was “World of Goo”: an extremely good game which I bought for me, my wife and my parents. Taking into account the amount of hours and fun I had, it was well worth the money.

Edit: I’ve already tested “Revenge of the Titans” and “Osmos” and they are worth a few dollars each. In fact, Osmos is both a greath game and screensaver!

Since Wii hype was derived from its motion-based controllers, some games have been modified in order to be able to use Wii’s main virtue. During the last months I’ve tried some Wii versions of classical videogames… with fustrating results, so Wii’s main virtue is actually stopping me from having fun with certain games. Actually, it’s very annoying to find some games so changed, their fun has totally vanished.

Pro Evolution Soccer (aka PES): having enjoyed countless hours of this game on both Playstation and Playstation 2, I can’t say I have played it more than once on my Wii. Since this was not the first Wii-berration I found, I was worried about it even before loading it on my console. Poor me, I was only worried about the lack of buttons, but a wiimote has 7 buttons plus 2 more on the Nunchuck, while Playstation had 10 buttons. Unfortunately, you can’t use Wii’s 8 buttons with just 2 hands, so it’s reduced to 4-5 with 2 directional crosses. In the end, I thought that an acceptable adaptation was possible. However, if you use these buttons you wouldn’t be using Wii’s superb motion engine
Solution: you need to point at the screen where you want to pass. You can see a sample below… but don’t get it wrong, these controls are awful.
Conclusion: this game can’t be called PES any more. It doesn’t deserve it.

Virtua Tennis 2009: This is my second favourite Wii-berration. In this case, I’m using Virtua Tennis just for its saga history and the playability it had (notice I said HAD) as an arcade simulator of tennis; but this explanation could be applied to any other racket sport in Wii, starting from the very beginning with Wii sports.
Just in case you’re not familiar with tennis video games on other consoles I’ll give you a few hints: you move your character with the directional pad, then press a button for striking and, while striking, direct your shoot with your directional pad. Easy as pie. On the Wii, you move your character with the directional pad, move your arm as if you were striking and, according to “when” you moved, the ball will go to one direction or the other. Though it’s intended to give users a enjoyable experience, traditional gamers will find this a paradigm of Wii-berration and tennis players will find it absurdly unrealistic. If we take Wii moves into reality, only parallel shots would actually cross the net.

Bust-a-move (aka puzzle bubble): Oh, my God!!! I could never imagine they could screw up this game too. If you don’t know Bust-a-move, it’s a game similar to tetris. You only need a directional pad and two buttons, nothing else. And yet, they screwed it up. They did actually broke this game so much they made me not want to play one of my top games from my late childhood.
Firstly, control is based on pointing the screen with the Wiimote rather than the directional pad. Just with this slight modification I’d say the game is broken, it doesn’t depend on your calculations or ability but on your speed on pointing. Second, but not least, the traditional mode has been turned into a single cooperative screen. Though my English is far from good, I assumed Versus as a synonim from “against”, but it doesn’t work like that in this case.

And now, a sample of the formula which granted bust-a-move a place among the big puzzle games from history… back from SNES time

I spent a few minutes trying to figure out images and objects… till I focused my eyes on the upper shelf behind Moss.

As you can see from the image above, they’ve placed 5 boardgames, in the following order: Memoir ’44 (is it the main game or an add-on?), Shadows over camelot, Mystery of the Abbey, Ticket to Ride and War onTerror. After checking the characteristics of every game I didn’t know, actually just 2 of them, it seems like the games were randomly bought and placed there. Obviously, these games would fit in a single collection but, taking into account the huge differences between them, it should be quite big. Mystery of the Abbey and Ticket to ride made me suspect about games driven by Hand Management but my theory failed against War on Terror, so that’s where I got my conclusion from.

I’m quite certain some of you wonder about the reason for posting. Easy: most Go players are somewhat nerds, who may enjoy watching this comedy and playing the same games I do. For the ones who didn’t know these games, I would recommend starting with Ticket to Ride, an easy family game with certain luck factor and lots of fun if played with 4-5 players.

Recently my life has been totally redirected in a new and unexpected direction.

This was my life until three months ago:

1. Study up to 12 hours per day. Fail the final exam.
2. Drive a dangerous car aged over 14 years.
3. Go is wonderful!!! Go is the best game in the world!! Learn and enjoy Go. Teach it to some friends.

Currently:

1. Work, up to 35 hours per week and study for the exam I didn’t pass.
2. Buy this meravellous thing you can see on the right side.
3. Disappointed about internet go players. Don’t play much go.
Moreover, don’t play go for an entire week.

Obviously this is the natural sequence of modern life itself, but for the last statement. For some reasons I’m not aware of, I’m not playing go at all. Indeed, the last game I played I found an opponent who was so rude as to make me resign after the first 50 moves. And it made me think about why I play Go. Go is, at the end of the day, a game, a hobby for all of us but a few professional players.

You can say you are very interested in it, you may spend hours studying pro games… but Go will remain a game. Extracted from "Games" at Wikipedia.org: Acording to French sociologist Roger Caillois, in his book Les jeux et les hommes (Games and Men)(1957), defined a game as an activity that must have the following characteristics:

fun: the activity is chosen for its light-hearted character

separate: it is circumscribed in time and place

uncertain: the outcome of the activity is unforeseeable

non-productive

governed by rules: the activity has rules that are different from everyday life

fictitious: it is accompanied by the awareness of a different reality

As we can see, one of the first characteristics for a game to have place is to be light-hearted, making the players have fun. Being rude, expressing hate… all these feelings and behaviours shouldn’t take place on such scenaries.

If you feel you don’t have fun on a game, resign.

You might think that you’ll be losing a few points on your rating, but you should consider a couple thoughts here: having many "funless" games might your curiosity in Go, and do you really mind that much about points?

Sincerely, I just want to play decently well at Go, being a low 3k or a high 4k doesn’t make any sense to me, being a 10k or a 20k represents quite a red line, one which you won’t cross by just losing a game you are not enjoying. Finish it as soon as possible or resign, take a breath, empty your mind and prepare for the next joyful game.

So, here I am. This blog is based on another blogging system, much more versatile and equally easy to use. As you can see on my previous post, the style of the images I’m uploading is different, this converts an image of 200k into an image around 20k, which is a great deeal for users without broadband connection.

The only problem with the migration were the comments, I was unable to migrate them to the new blog… and it’s obvious that the new style of boards might not be as nice, but it is exactly as good as the old one when it turns into a go situation.

We’ll have to wait for the old posts to dissappear in order to check the speed increase; on the meanwhile, I’ll just tell you that the whole board image fromo my previous post occupied 140k on blogger, now its size is only 22k.

There is one more thing: old posts are a bit messy, their alignement has been missed and I’ll have to fix a few things, but they are still as useful as they were two weeks ago.
